Paul Lake        24th November 1935 - 9th January 2017

Born 1935, Eling, Hampshire, a student of calligraphy at Southampton College of Art, Paul worked as an exhibition, magazine and freelance graphic designer as well as a full time painter.

A subtle and versatile artist with an awareness of the history and language of painting, he employed a variety of styles from figurative or abstract to geometric design in paint and needlepoint. Interested in size and scale his work tended to be small landscapes, paintings on architectural themes or large abstracts and complex murals.

Rocks, mountains, moorlands and its streams were lifelong passions.

Ancient Boulder

A long history of rock falls along with ever flowing water carve deep ravines where, after rain, gently trickling streams become roaring white water torrents.

Red rock and white water

Where a mountain stream meets the sea

Commissioned in 1977 for a day centre at Hythe hospital. In the background is a familiar local view across Southampton Water seen through foliage in which a variety of creatures are hidden, from tiny ladybirds to bees, butterflies, birds and a harvest mouse, all to be found over time. The aim was to be beautiful and enough fun to help regular visits pass less slowly.
